Texas senior rower Jennifer VanderMaarel has been named to the 2011 Pocock All-America Second Team by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). The award is only the third All-America honor in UT program history and the first since 2004.
As a senior, she captained her squad as it claimed its third straight Big 12 Championship. A stalwart in the Horns' 1V8 in 2011, VanderMaarel also helped UT win the women's collegiate four at the Head of the Oklahoma. She led the 1V8 to wins at the Head of the Colorado and the Head of the Hooch and teamed with Felicia Izaguirre-Werner to win the open pair at the Head of the Hooch.
VanderMaarel paced her boat to wins over Louisville, Iowa, Wisconsin and San Diego at the Longhorn Invitational and rowed the 1V8 to a win over Kansas in a dual race. At the Virginia Invitational, she led the 1V8 to wins over No. 17 UCLA and No. 13 Clemson.
In addition to being voted team captain in 2011, VanderMaarel's teammates also tabbed her most competitive and she shared the team's most inspirational award with two other Longhorns. As a senior, she pulled herself to the top of the UT all-time 6-K Erg chart, breaking the previous record that had stood since 1998-99, with a 22:23 mark.
