Big 12 Sends 29 Student-Athletes to NCAA Wrestling Championship

NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

The NCAA on Wednesday announced the 330 student-athletes, including 45 at-large selections, for the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. A combined 29 Big 12 student-athletes will compete in the event. The league's 24 automatic-qualifiers are joined by five at-large selections.

Six Cyclones will be competing at the national tournament: Earl Hall (125), Gabe Moreno (141), Michael Moreno (165), Tanner Weatherman (174), Lelund Weatherspoon (184) and Kyven Gadson (197). The Moreno brothers, Weatherman, Weatherspoon and Gadson all gained automatic-qualifier spots with their performances at the 2014 Big 12 Wrestling Championship in Norman, Okla., last weekend. Hall received an at-large bid to the tournament. 

A total of seven Oklahoma wrestlers qualified for the event following their performances at the league championship on their home mat. Jarrod Patterson (125), Cody Brewer (133), Nick Lester (141), Kendric Maple (149), Justin DeAngelis (157), Andrew Howe (174) and Travis Rutt (197), Ross Larson (285) was selected at-large.

Oklahoma State's team will take all 10 of its starters to Oklahoma City. Eddie Klimara (125), Jon Morrison (133), Anthony Collica (141), Josh Kindig (149), Alex Dieringer (157), Tyler Caldwell (165), Chris Perry (174) and Austin Marsden (285) all earned automatic bids for after their performances in the Big 12 Championship while 184 pounder Nolan Boyd and 197 pounder Blake Rosholt  received at-large bids.

Four Mountaineers earned automatic bids with their performances at the Big 12 Championship. Cory Stainbrook (125) and Mike Morales (149) finished the tournament in third place, while sophomore Bubba Scheffel (174) took fourth and sophomore A.J. Vizcarrondo (285) earned second-place honors. Senior Colin Johnston (141) was awarded an at-large bid to the tournament.
The 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships return to Oklahoma City on March 20-22 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. New ticket options, including hospitality, are still available. Visit ncaa.com/wrestling to purchase.

Fans will be able to watch the entire 2014 NCAA Championships as ESPN expands its coverage. ESPN will televise the semifinals and championship finals while ESPNU will air the preliminary sessions and medal round. The entire tournament will be available on WatchESPN.
