Three Big 12 men’s tennis teams and Baylor’s women’s squad all secured a spot in the second round of the NCAA Championship by tallying first-round victories on Friday.
The 13th-ranked Baylor men’s tennis team blanked Prairie View A&M 4-0 in the first round of championship play Friday night at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, the Bears advance to the second round for the 11th consecutive year. Baylor will be back in action Saturday night when they host 25th-ranked Tulsa (16-7) at 6 p.m.
The No. 14 Oklahoma men’s tennis team advanced to the final of the NCAA Norman Regional, defeating Wichita State 4-1 on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The Big 12 champion Sooners will face North Carolina State at 2 p.m. on Saturday for the right to compete in the Sweet Sixteen in Urbana, Ill., next week.
UT swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-0 at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The Longhorns advance to face Texas A&M in the Second Round Saturday at 3 p.m.
TCU fell in first-round action at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, as Drake posted a 4-1 victory to advance in the tournament. The Horned Frogs, the Los Angeles Regional’s No. 3 seed, finished their season with an 18-10 overall record, while the second-seeded Bulldogs moved to 25-3.
In women’s action, the 20th-ranked Baylor Bears earned a 4-1 victory against No. 43 San Diego State. BU will take on first-seeded and 11th-ranked Northwestern on Saturday at Noon. Earlier this season, Baylor lost a 4-1 decision on the road against the Wildcats.
The league’s other five women’s teams in the tournament will play their first round matches Saturday.
