Pelger, Fernanda & Willms Recognized as Volleyball Players of the Week

Kaitlynn Pelger (Kansas State), María Fernanda (Oklahoma) and Hannah Willms (Iowa State) have earned Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Week honors for matches of Sept. 19-25. Pelger picks up her second-straight Offensive Player of the Week distinction and her third career weekly honor. Fernanda has been named the Defensive Player of the Week. She earned the same honor in 2009 along with a Rookie of the Week nod. This is Willms' first recognition.

Kaitlynn Pelger kept up her impressive pace this season with 17 kills in a sweep over Baylor on Saturday night, extending the Wildcats' winning streak to eight matches. The sophomore middle blocker pounded out 17 kills in the 25-19, 25-15, 25-18 win over the Bears while hitting .333. She also added one ace. She averaged 6.00 digs per-set from her position and posted 18 digs on the night to tie her career high. In addition to the 18 digs and 17 kills, Pelger was in on three block assists and posted a solo stop for four blocks. Pelger ranks in the top 10 in the league in six categories, including first in kills, with an average of 4.78, and in points, with an average of 5.89. Her .362 hitting mark is fourth in the Big 12 and her 0.40 service ace average is third best.

María Fernanda, Oklahoma, L, Jr., Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico
Fernanda was the defensive leader in OU's four-set win at Baylor Wednesday evening. The junior averaged 6.75 digs per-set and had 27 total against the Bears. She also added three assists in the win and recorded her 24th career match with 20-plus digs, fourth this season. The 27 digs are the third most in the conference in a four-set match this year.

Hannah Willms, Iowa State, OH, Fr., Waterloo, Iowa
Willms, the Preseason Newcomer of the Year, hit .340 and averaged 3.50 kills per-set last week helping the No. 16 Cyclones to a 2-0 conference start with straight-sets wins over Missouri and Texas Tech. The redshirt freshman from Waterloo, Iowa, had 21 kills, second on the team during the week, with only four errors and added four block assists and an ace. Against conference opponents, Willms ranks in the top 10 in kills per-set, hitting percentage and points.
