Iowa State teammates Craig Brackins and Marquis Gilstrap have been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for games of November 16-22 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. It is the fourth career player honor for Brackins and the first rookie recognition for Gilstrap.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Craig Brackins, Iowa State, F, Jr., 6-10, 230, Palmdale, Calif./Brewster Academy [N.H.] Brackins averaged 25.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in two ISU wins last week. The junior forward scored 22 points and grabbed 10 boards as the Cyclones won at Drake, 90-70. It was the first time Iowa State had scored 90 points in a road win since 1994. He followed that performance with 28 points and 12 rebounds versus Mississippi Valley State, the 20th double-double of his career. Brackins shot 63.6 percent (21-of-33) for the week and made his only 3-point attempt. He was also 7-of-8 (.875) from the free throw line, while adding three assists, three blocks and four steals.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Marquis Gilstrap, Iowa State, F, Sr., 6-7, 215, Covington, Ga./East Side/Gulf Coast CC [Fla.] Gilstrap was instrumental in the Cyclones’ two wins, averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds. The senior forward tallied the first 20-point performance of his career with 21 points in the 96-55 victory over Mississippi Valley State. He also had five rebounds in that contest. Earlier in the week, Gilstrap had just seven points, but grabbed nine boards in the win at Drake. In two outings, he was 11-of-20 (.550) from the floor, including 4-of-5 (.800) from beyond the arc. He also had three assists and two steals. Gilstrap has scored in double digits in three of four games so far this season.
