Denis Clemente (Kansas State) and Tommy Mason-Griffin (Oklahoma) have been selected as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week for games of Feb. 1-7 in voting by a panel of media covering the Conference. Clemente garners his second career honor, while Mason-Griffin is chosen top rookie for the second straight week.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Denis Clemente, Kansas State, G, Sr., 6-1, 180, Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Calusa Prep [Fla.] Clemente averaged 26.5 points and 4.0 assists as Kansas State recorded road victories at Nebraska (76-57) and Iowa State (79-75). The senior guard started play with a 23-point effort versus the Huskers, connecting on 7-of-14 shots from the floor. He then followed with his third career 30-point performance by scoring 30 points on 9-of-18 shooting against the Cyclones. For the week, he hit 50 percent (16-of-32) of his shots from the floor, including 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from 3-point range. He also totaled seven rebounds and averaged 36.0 minutes. Clemente is tied for fourth in the Big 12 in 3-point field goals made (51) this season.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Tommy Mason-Griffin, Oklahoma, G, Fr., 5-11, 203, Houston, Texas/James Madison Mason-Griffin recorded 24 points, five rebounds and four assists in the Sooners’ 80-71 upset of No. 9 Texas on Saturday. The freshman guard was 6-of-12 (.500) from the floor, including 5-of-7 (.714) from beyond the arc. He also connected on 7-of-9 (.778) from the free throw line, while adding five rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes. In Big 12 play, Mason-Griffin is averaging a team-high 18.3 points and shooting a Big 12-best 51.9 percent from 3-point territory. Over the last five outings, he is averaging 23.6 points and 4.0 assists, while hitting at a .543 clip on his 3-pointers.
