Griffin, McCray Earn Final Men’s Basketball Weekly Awards Of 2009
Release: 03/09/2009

Sophomore forward Blake Griffin (Oklahoma) and freshman guard Toney McCray (Nebraska) have been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week for March 2 - 8 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference.  It is the sixth player honor this year for Griffin, while McCray captures rookie recognition for the second time.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Blake Griffin, Oklahoma, F, So., 6-10, 251, Oklahoma City, Okla./Oklahoma Christian School

Griffin led the Sooners to a split of two games as Oklahomah secured the No. 2 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship.  The sophomore forward averaged 24.5 points and 17.5 rebounds, improving his Big 12-record total for double-doubles to 25.  He made 73.1 percent (19-of-26) of his shots from the field, while also adding five assists, two blocks and three steals.  The six Big 12 Player of the Week honors for Griffin in 2008-09 ties the conference single-season record held by three others (P.J. Tucker, UT; Andre Emmett, TTU; Marcus Fizer, ISU).

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Toney McCray, Nebraska, G, Fr., 6-6, 205, Missouri City, Texas/For Bend Elkins

McCray helped Nebraska to two wins in conference games, as the Huskers finished with an 8-8 record in league play for the first time since 1998-99.  The freshman guard averaged 11.0 points, including 18 in NU’s road win at Baylor on Saturday.  He was 9-of-14 (.643) from the floor overall and connected on 4-of-5 shots from the free throw line.  He also had six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals in the two contests.  McCray is averaging 5.9 points and 2.8 rebounds this season.
