The Big 12 Conference has announced its Preseason All-Big 12 Team as well as honors for preseason player, freshman and newcomer of the year for the 2016-17 women's basketball season. The awards are chosen by head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

Nina Davis (Baylor) has been named Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive year while her teammate Lauren Cox (Baylor) was honored as Preseason Freshman of the Year. Kristina King (West Virginia) picked up Preseason Newcomer of the Year.

Joining Davis on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team are Alexis Jones (Baylor), Seanna Johnson (Iowa State), Breanna Lewis (Kansas State) and Brooke McCarty (Texas). All five honorees were also named to last season's All-Big 12 First Team at the conclusion of the regular season.

Davis has been an All-Big 12 First Team selection the past three years and was the 2015 Big 12 Player of the Year. She was also selected to the past three Big 12 All-Tournament Teams and named Most Outstanding Player twice after helping the Lady Bears to the regular and postseason Big 12 titles in each of her previous three seasons. Davis was also the 2014 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earned All-America recognition in 2015 and 2016. The senior forward was Baylor's top scorer last year at 16.3 points and tied for the team rebounding lead at 6.1 boards.

King originally signed with West Virginia in November 2013 before spending the past two seasons at Gulf Coast State. She was tabbed as the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Year and was an All-America first team selection while being ranked by some recruiting services as the nation's top junior college player. King led her GCS squad to a 32-1 mark and the 2016 junior college national championship. She averaged 19.1 points and 8.8 rebounds as a sophomore while connecting on 54.2 percent of her field goal attempts.

Cox concluded her prep career as the 2016 Women's Basketball Coaches Association High School Player of the Year and ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect by some recruiting services. She was named Texas' Gatorade Player of the Year and USA Today's Texas Player of the Year as a junior and senior, and was a Naismith and McDonald's All-America First Team selection as a senior. Cox averaged 21.8 points and 12.7 rebounds in 2015-16 while leading her Flower Mound team to a 23-7 record and the playoffs. She has won four gold medals while competing with USA Basketball.

The Big 12 Women's Basketball Preseason Poll will be announced on October 12. A Big 12 women's basketball preview show will be televised on FOX Sports affiliates prior to the beginning of regular season games. The first airings are scheduled for Monday, November 7.
