Smith and Chambers Earn Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week

Tanisha Smith (Texas A&M) and Brittany Chambers (Kansas State) were named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Players of the Week by a media voting panel for games from Nov. 30-Dec. 6. Both earned their first career award.

Tanisha Smith led No. 10/7 Texas A&M to a 3-0 week with victories over Stephen F. Austin, Southern Illinois and No. 20/19 California. She earned tournament MVP honors as the Aggies claimed the Colliers International Classic title with a 68-61 victory over host Cal in the championship game. It marked the team's second win of the season over a Top 25 opponent. The Aggies improved to 6-0, which ties as the second-best start in school history. For the week, Smith averaged a team-leading 21.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals. She shot 54.3 percent from the floor, 76.9 percent from the charity stripe and knocked down four three-pointers. The senior guard/forward scored 16 of her career-high 30 points in the first half of play against Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 2. It marked the most points scored by an Aggie in the Gary Blair Era, surpassing 29 points by Morenike Atunrase versus Kansas on Jan. 15, 2006 and 29 points by Takia Starks against Texas Tech on Feb. 17, 2008. Smith became the 15th player in school history on the 28th all-time occasion to reach 30-or-more points in a game. She is currently on a 14-game double-digit scoring streak.

Brittany Chambers helped the Wildcats to a 2-1 week and earned Commerce Bank Classic All-Tournament Team honors. She averaged 16.3 points on a .600 field goal percentage, including .444 from the 3-point line. The fresman guard also averaged 5.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists. She has scored in double figures in five straight games and six of her first eight career games. Chambers has also made at least one 3-point field goal in seven straight games. For the season, she ranks 20th in the Big 12 in scoring at 13.3 per game (second among the league's freshmen), sixth in the league in three-point field goal percentage at .543 and ninth in three-point field goals made per game at 2.4.
