Hooks and Canion Earn Big 12 Weekly Softball Accolades

Amy Hooks (Texas) and Whitney Canion (Baylor) were selected as the Big 12 Player and Pitcher of the Week for competition from Feb. 17-23, the conference office announced. Canion is the first freshman in league history and first since 2006 (Cat Osterman, Texas) to win pitcher honors in the first three weeks of the season.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Hooks earned her first conference weekly award after her performance through seven games at the Cathedral City
Classic. The UT backstop tabbed two seventh-inning, game-winning home runs against Tennessee Tech and Long Island to lead the Longhorns to a 6-1 record at the tournament. The sophomore hit .389 with two doubles, two home runs and three walks, while posting an .833 slugging percentage and .476 on-base percentage.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Whitney Canion, Baylor, P, Fr., Aledo, Texas/Aledo
Making four appearances through Baylor’s five games, Canion struck out 41 batters in 26.2 innings of work. She
allowed only four runs and four walks, holding her opponents to a .194 batting average. She threw a complete-game extra inning win over Sam Houston State, compiling 16 strikeouts in 10 innings. Her performance placed her second on the Baylor single-game strikeout list. Canion now has 96 strikeouts on the season, and is averaging 10.45 per seven innings pitched.
