2014 Big 12 Fall Scholar-Athletes of the Year Announced

The Big 12 Conference has announced its Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients for the 2014 fall sport season. The following student-athletes have been selected as the award-winners for their respective sports based on a vote of each sport’s head coaching group. Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.

2014 Big 12 Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year:
Jonathan Tijerina, Baylor, Sr., Marshall, Texas/Marshall
Tijerina holds a 4.00 grade point average as a Biology major at Baylor. The senior is a four-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team member and has earned Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll status each year at BU. The senior also competes in indoor and outdoor track and field for the Bears where he has also earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors on three occasions. He has competed in all seven of the Bears team races this season.

2014 Big 12 Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year:
Kaitlyn Gillespie, West Virginia, Sr., Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls Christian
Gillespie, a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team member, carries a 3.94 grade point average while studying exercise physiology. She competed in five races for the Mountaineers this past fall with a top 30 finish at each event, including the first or second place finish on the team in each and a 26th overall finish at the NCAA Championship as WVU finished eighth overall.

2014 Big 12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year:
Tyler Lockett, Kansas State, Sr., Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington
Lockett earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors this season after representing on the second team in 2012. Lockett, who is studying business managment, is a two-time Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year and was honred on the American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team in 2013.

2014 Big 12 Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year:
Jaelene Hinkle, Texas Tech, Sr., Denver, Colo./Valor Christian
Hinkle became the first Red Raider since 1996 to earn All-American status for her work on the playing field and then an Academic All-America nod in the same season. Hinkle was named a Capital One Academic All-America First Team Selection with her 3.81 grade point average in human sciences. She is also a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree.

2014 Big 12 Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year:
Nikki Attea, West Virginia, Jr., East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North
Attea, an Academic All-Big 12 First Team member the past two seasons and an Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team member as a freshman, maintains a 3.63 grade point average while studying computer science at WVU. Attea was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s All-Midwest Region Team this season after leading the Mountaineers in attack percentage.

The Big 12 Conference established the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards in 2012-13. A Scholar-Athlete of the Year is named in each of the Conference’s sponsored sports. Each Big 12 institution will nominate one individual per sport, and the winners will be selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches for each sport.

Scholar-Athlete of the Year nomination criteria includes:
•must be a junior or senior (athletic and academic standing)
•cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher
•participation in at least 60% of the team’s scheduled contests
•minimum of one year in residence at the institution
