November 01, 2010

Roy Helu Jr. (Nebraska), Byron Landor (Baylor) and Derek Epperson (Baylor) have been named Big 12 Conference Football Players of the Week, as selected by a media panel. Landor (defense) picked up his second award of the season while Helu Jr. (offense) and Epperson (special teams) were recognized for the first time in their careers.

Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
Roy Helu Jr., Nebraska, RB, Sr, Danville, Calif.
Roy Helu Jr., set the school record with 307 yards on 28 carries in No. 14/12 Nebraska's win over No. 8/8 Missouri. The senior running back also tied his career best with three rushing touchdowns, which covered 66, 73 and 58 yards. In addition Helu Jr. added a reception for 14 yards. His 307 rushing yards are the most by any player in college football this season - topping the previous high by 30 yards. The performance also bettered the previous NU record of 294 rushing yards by Calvin Jones at Kansas in 1991. Helu Jr. ran for 142 yards in the first quarter, including a 66-yard touchdown on NU's first play from scrimmage. His 73-yard score later in the first quarter was a career-long rush. Helu Jr. has six touchdown runs this season that have covered at least 53 yards. His rushing yards last Saturday moved him from 11th to sixth on the Cornhusker career rushing list.

Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week
Byron Landor, Baylor, S, Sr, Lake Charles, La.
Byron Landor recorded his second consecutive game of 15-plus tackles in No. 25/24 Baylor's win at Texas. He tallied nine solo stops, 15 total tackles, two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry. With Baylor leading 30-19 in the fourth quarter, the senior safety made six stops, including four straight, while holding Texas to a field goal on a 15-play drive. Landor has double-digit tackles in six of his last seven games.

Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

Derek Epperson punted four times for an average of 56.8 yards in No. 25/24 Baylor's win at Texas. He had punts of 65, 64, 51 and 47 yards. His career long-tying 65 yarder came with BU leading by eight points with under three minutes to play. He punted from the Baylor 19-yard line, forcing Texas to start its final drive from its own 8-yard line. Epperson moved into a tie for fifth all-time at Baylor with seven punts of 60-plus yards and climbed to second in program history with 48 punts of 50-plus yards.
