South Dakota State’s Seth Gross and Oklahoma State’s Dean Heil, both advance to the NCAA Championship finals on Saturday evening in Saint Louis. Gross will face Iowa’s Cory Clark in the 133 pound bout, while Heil will take on Virginia’s George DiCamillo in the 141 pound tussle.
No. 2 Gross quickly disposed of his first three opponents by a decision, technical fall and major decision. The sophomore went up against conference foe Kaid Brock (OSU) in the semifinals, which was a rematch of the Big 12 Championship bout. Gross pulled off a 12-2 major decision over Brock to earn SDSU’s first NCAA final’s qualifier.
In the 141 bracket, top-seeded Heil racked decisions against foes from Clarion, Navy and Missouri before recording the win over Rutgers Anthony Ashnault in the semifinals by a score of 4-2.
Oklahoma State currently sits in third place in the team race just 35 points behind top placed Penn State going into the last day of competition.
39 wrestlers earned automatic qualifying bids while an additional five athletes tallied at-large bids. At the beginning of March, Oklahoma State recorded its fifth consecutive Big 12 Championship by sending 10 wrestlers to the event finals in Tulsa.
