Indoor Track & Field Postseason Awards Announced
March 02, 2017

The Big 12 has announced its 2017 indoor track and field postseason honors, as selected by the league’s head coaches.

The head coaches of the winners of the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship - Baylor’s Todd Harbor (women) and Texas’ Mario Sategna (men) - earned Indoor Coach of the Year honors. The BU women earned their first track and field championship in conference history, while the UT men outscored second-place Kansas by 13 points (123.5 to 110.5) en route to their eighth conference title.

The men’s Outstanding Performer honor was awarded to Texas Longhorns’ runner Senoj-Jay Givans after an impressive effort at the Big 12 Championship. The women’s Outstanding Performer went to Iowa State State’s Jhoanmy Luque, who took home three event titles at the championship meet.

Givans earned first place finishes in the 60m and the 4X400m relay and third place in the 200m finals. UT’s 4X400m relay outran Baylor by less than 17 tenths of a second. The relay win put Texas over the top to pull off the team championship crown.

ISU’s Luque took home the women’s high-point award with 20 points, winning two event titles (long jump and triple jump). Luque flew to a triple jump of 44-9 1/2, a personal best by over three inches which moved her up to No. 3 in the country on the season.

The UT’s Rushelle Burton picks up the Outstanding Freshmen award on the women’s side, with Maxwell Willis garnering the men’s accolade for Baylor. Burton raced to a 8.09 time in the women’s 60m hurdles. Her mark was almost 20 tenths of a second faster than second-place finisher and teammate, Ariel Jones.

Max Willis had a breakout performance in his first Big 12 indoor championship. The freshman won the 200-meter title in personal-best mark of 20.76. He is BU’s eighth champion in that event and the first since Trayvon Bromell in 2015. Earlier in the day, he took second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.67, finishing just .08 seconds behind three-time Big 12 champion Givans. Willis scored 20 points at the meet to be the second-highest point scorer out of all men’s athletes.
