Rowing Finals Set After Exciting Day One

After a thrilling day of preliminary races, the finals are set at the 2017 Big 12 Rowing Championship at Melton Hill Lake. Alabama, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas placed boats in all five Grand Finals set for Sunday.

The top three teams from each preliminary heat raced on Saturday advanced to the Grand Finals, while the remaining two teams will battle it out in the Petite Final.

In the First Eight race, Texas (6:10.666) and Oklahoma (6:27.947) took the top spots in their respective heats. The two squads will be joined by Alabama, Kansas, Kansas State and Tennessee in the Grand Final, while Old Dominion and West Virginia will face off in the Petite Final.

The second race of the day, the Second Eight, was also topped by Texas (6:26.742) and Oklahoma (6:32.849). Joining OU and UT in the Grand Final will be Alabama, Kansas, Kansas State and Tennessee. Old Dominion and West Virginia will face off in the Petite Final.

Alabama and Texas took the top spots in the First Four with times of 7:15.272 and 7:07.812, respectively. The pair will be joined by Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Tennessee in the Grand Final, while the Lady Monarchs and Mountaineers will collide in the Petite Final.

Since there were only seven boats in the Second Four race, all seven teams will advance to the Grand Final. OU and UT led with wins in their respective heats. The Sooners put up a time of 7:16.613 and the Longhorns hit a 7:12.170 mark.

In the final preliminary race, the Third Eight, Texas (6:42.148) and Oklahoma (6:44.535) took their respective heats. The duo will compete against Alabama, Kansas, Kansas State and Tennessee in the Grand Final. Old Dominion and West Virginia face off in the Petite Final.

Alabama, Kansas, Texas and Tennessee competed in the Third Four on Saturday as an exhibition race. Texas placed first with a time of 7:21.372, while Alabama finished in second place with a 7:28.357 time. Kansas and Tennessee trailed behind with respective times of 7:47.850 and 7:59.919.
