All-Big 12 Rowing Honors Announced

Gia Doonan (Texas), Carlijn Hutter (Oklahoma) and Dave O'Neill (Texas) receive 2017 All-Big 12 Rowing nods, as voted on by league coaches. Two of the three honorees have set or matched Big 12 rowing records: Doonan records Big 12 Rower of the Year for the second time, becoming the first student-athlete in conference history to be named twice. O'Neill ties the league record with his third Coach of the Year title, joining Oklahoma's Leanne Craine as the most decorated league coaches. Hutter becomes the second Sooner to win Newcomer of the Year in league history and the first since 2012.

 

Big 12 ROWER OF THE YEAR

Gia Doonan, Texas, First Varsity Eight, Sr., Marion, Mass.

  • Doonan becomes the first rower in Big 12 history to earn Rower of the Year status for two seasons after first earning the title in 2015.
  • The Varsity Eight student-athlete lead Texas to its third straight Big 12 championship.
  • Led UT to a 6:14.497 first place finish in the First Eight Grand Final during the Big 12 Championship, beating the second place team by over 12 seconds.
  • Owns two gold medals at the U23 world championships last summer and helped to set team records on the ERG.

 

Big 12 NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Carlijn Hutter, Oklahoma, First Varsity Eight (Stroke), Fr., Utrecht, Netherlands

  • The freshman contributed to the Sooners status as runner up in the Big 12 Championship, including a 6:26.997 time in the First Eight Grand Final, where OU took second.
  • Earned All-Big 12 Team honors for her efforts this season, as voted on by coaches.
  • Sharpened Oklahoma's competitive edge, leading the team back into the top 20 for the first time since 2013.

 

Big 12 COACH OF THE YEAR

Dave O'Neill, Texas

  • Notched his third straight Big 12 honor in as many years with the Longhorns.
  • Led his team to its third consecutive Big 12 title with 137 points.
