Alabama’s First Varsity Eight was chosen as the Big 12 Boat of the Week, by league coaches, for the second time this season.
The crew received Boat of the Week after their dominant performance in the Sunshine State Invitational in Sarasota, Fla. Entering the event at the No. 1 overall seed, the Tide successfully placed a crew in each possible Grand Final, led by the First Varsity 8+.
In the final race of Friday’s heat session, 1V8+ became the fourth Tide crew to not only advance to Saturday’s Grand Finals, but win its respected heat with a time of 6:31.50. On Saturday, the crew became the first of four Alabama boats to win gold in their respected event, finishing in 6:30.20.
This is the third straight honor for Alabama, which ties the longest streak in Big 12 rowing history. The last team to win three consecutive Big 12 weekly awards was Texas in 2017.
