IRVING, Texas -- The Big 12 has announced the Swimmers and Divers of the Week for meets from Feb. 5-18. The University of Texas swept the men's side with Matt McGinnis (swim) and Jonathan Wilcox (dive) winning this week's accolades, while Kelly Grushecky (Nebraska) and Erin Mertz (Kansas) were honored on the women's side. The winners were chosen by vote of the league's head swimming and diving coaches.
Men's Swimmer of the Week
Matt McGinnis, Texas, Sr., Raleigh, N.C.
McGinnis earned five victories in meets against Texas A&M and Southern Methodist. In the Longhorns' 119-99 victory over rival A&M, the senior took first place honors in the 500 free (4:26.72), 100 free (43.85) and the 400-free relay (19.85, second leg). McGinnis followed up that performance with two wins over SMU in the 200 individual medley (1:48.13) and the 500 free (4:28.05). This is the sixth career weekly award for McGinnis.
Men's Diver of the Week
Jonathan Wilcox, Texas, Jr., Bellevue, Wash.
Wilcox captured the one-meter (344.40) and came in second in the three-meter (385.96) against No. 20 Texas A&M. The junior also earned victories on both boards against Southern Methodist with a one-meter score of 349.05 and a 361.27 on the three-meter. This is the first career honor for Wilcox and the fifth diving award for Texas this season.
Women's Swimmer of the Week
Kelly Grushecky, Nebraska, Fr., West Newton, Pa.
Grushecky tallied three victories in the Huskers meet against No. 21 Missouri. The freshman earned first place honors in the 200 butterfly (2:03.19), 100 butterfly (56.67) and the 200-free relay (1:36.25). Her three wins moved her into a tie for the most victories on the team this season with nine. The West Newton, Pa., native won at least one race in every dual meet this season except Nebraska's loss at Kansas. The award is the first for Grushecky who is only the second Husker to be honored since the 2003-04 season.
Women's Diver of the Week
Erin Mertz, Kansas, Fr., Omaha Neb.
Mertz earned wins on the one-meter (307.65) and three-meter (302.33) in the Jayhawks dual against Iowa State. This is the first career accolade for Mertz who is also the first freshman to win the female diving honor this season.
