2008 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team Announced

Complete Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team (PDF) IRVING, Texas--The Big 12 Conference has named 56 student-athletes to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis Team, the league office announced. Among those honored were six nominated with a 4.00 grade point average. Hubert Chodkiewicz (Texas) and Jay Wofford (Texas Tech) posted a 4.00 on the men's side. The women's student-athletes with a perfect GPA include Chrissy Derouin and Caitlin Loprinzi (Iowa State), Imke Reimers (Nebraska) and Lauren Ovelgonne (Oklahoma State). The Texas Tech men's squad placed a league-leading five student-athletes on the team, while Colorado and the Red Raiders tied for a Big 12-high five selections in the women's field. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's tennis academic all-league squad consisted of 14 first team members combined with six on the second team, while the women had 27 first team recipients and nine student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. The Big 12 Tennis Championships will be held on Thursday-Sunday, April 24-27 at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center for the third time in conference history.
Baylor (2002-05, `07), Texas (1997, 1999, 2006) and Texas A&M (1998, 2000-01) have combined to win all 11 of the previous men's Big 12 postseason championships. The women's championship features the following winners - Baylor (2006-07), Texas (1997-2002, `05), Oklahoma State (2003), and Texas A&M (2004).
