Texas Tech's Kipyego Captures Second Consecutive Women's Individual Title
Nov. 19, 2007
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego won her second consecutive women's individual title at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships. Kipyego's time of 19 minutes, 30.9 seconds surpassed her winning time from last year and was enough to edge out Colorado's Jenny Barringer (19:47.8) for the second consecutive year. Kipyego's victory marks the sixth time in Big 12 history that a runner from the conference won the individual title. It is the first time in Big 12 history that a runner has won the national race in multiple years. Baylor was the top Big 12 women's team with 427 points, narrowly beating Texas Tech (433) for a 17th-place finish. On the men's side, Oklahoma State's squad led the conference by placing third (180 points), followed by Colorado in seventh (287). The third-place finish for the Cowboys marks their highest since joining the Big 12 Conference. Individually, Colorado's Brent Vaughn (29:47.4), was the first Big 12 men's competitor to cross the finish line in fifth place. Behind him was Oklahoma State's Ryan Vail (29:57.9) and David Chirchir (30:19.2), placing 11th and 21st respectively. This was the fourth year the championship took place on the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course at Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind., including the third year in a row.
