Oak Ridge, Tenn. - Texas captured the 2018 Big 12 Rowing Championship crown and NCAA automatic qualifying bid on Sunday morning at Melton Hill Lake. The No. 3-ranked Longhorns swept all five races to capture their fourth consecutive Big 12 title and the eighth overall.
The Longhorns placed first overall with 137 points in the Big 12 standings and accumulated 48 points in the automatic qualifying standings. Oklahoma placed second with 109 Big 12 points and 38 AQ points. K-State (99), Kansas (71) and West Virginia (47) rounded out the Big 12 standings.
Tennessee finished third in the AQ standings with 37 points followed by K-State (31), Alabama (23), Kansas (21), Old Dominion (10) and West Virginia (8).
UT completed the top-podium sweep with a first-place finish in the Grand Final with a time of 6:30.899. Oklahoma (6:41.714) came in second, followed by Tennessee (6:44.184).
The Longhorns won the Second Eight with a time of 6:37.042. Tennessee placed second with a time of 6:53.670 followed by a bronze medal finish by K-State (6:55.395).
For the fourth consecutive season, Texas (7:19.717) captured the gold medal in the First Four followed by a silver medal placement from Oklahoma (7:30.862) and a bronze medal finish by Alabama (7:36.175).
In the Second Four Grand Final, the Longhorns again took the top spot on the podium with a finish time of 7:36.062 followed by Oklahoma at 7:42.595 and Alabama at 7:47.482.
Texas opened the day with a first-place finish in the Third Eight Grand Final with a time of 6:54.992. Oklahoma crossed the line at 7:07.564 for second and Alabama placed third in 7:08.299.
The NCAA Selection Show to reveal this year’s participants for the 2018 NCAA Division I Rowing Championship will be on Tuesday, May 15, at 4 p.m. CT. The NCAA Championships will be held May 25-27, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
